FUNGAL INFECTION OF THE NAILS (ONYCHOMYCOSIS)

This condition results in the nails becoming thickened, yellow and opaque. Gradually the nails become deformed, discoloured and crumbly. A nail scrapping taken by your GP or podiatrist can confirm the presence of fungus under a microscope or by culturing.

Treatment:

  • topical medications (paints and creams)
  • regular nail cutting and filing to allow effective application of local fungicides
  • Oral anti-fungal in widespread and severe cases.
